“From September, we will initiate the collection of signatures for a new referendum on the issue of withdrawal from the migration pact,” he said.
The intention to seek an exit from the migration act was confirmed by PiS parliamentary fraction chair Mariusz Blaszczak. “Together we can force the government to do what it should have done long ago — unilaterally withdraw from the migration pact,” he wrote on his social media page.
The parliamentarian stressed the paramount importance of the migration issue, since it directly affects the safety of Poles. Despite this, some comments on social media on this news are sharply negative.
In May, the EU finally adopted a reform tightening the rules for accepting migrants from third countries. The Pact on Migration and Asylum is designed to counter illegal migration, human trafficking and toughen penalties for related crimes within the EU.
The document – developed and revised for almost a decade – envisages a range of new rules governing increased control at external borders, speeding up the procedure for processing asylum requests and more effective expulsion of persons who do not have the right to stay in the EU. Moreover, the reform assumes a ‘fair’ distribution of migrants across various EU members, which should reduce the burden on the ‘first line’ states facing an influx of illegal migrants.
